THE Macuata Qoliqoli Committee has extended the application deadline for fishing licences following an overwhelming response from the public.

Committee chairman and Macuata chief Ratu Aisea Katonivere said the response had been positive.

"We have received a good response and there is a demand for the qoliqoli licences in the Macuata waters," Ratu Aisea said.

"As a result, we have extended the application period for fishing licences to the end of this month," he said.

Ratu Aisea said poaching problems faced by the vanua of Caumatalevu had eased.
"Poaching is no longer an issue of challenge as we have our fishing wardens to guide the qoliqoli of Macuata.

"The support from the villagers and the committee in ensuring that fishing wardens are supplied with the necessary materials to carry out their work effectively has also been good," Ratu Aisea said.

In the district of Nadogo, the qoliqoli committee has banned fishing on Sundays. Tui Nadogo Ratu Ilisaniti Malodali said the ban had always been part of their fishing licence condition and would be re-enforced this year.

The ban applies to commercial and individual applicants.
