Tui Cakau's Concern Over Fisheries Use

Fiji Times News

TUI Cakau Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has raised his concern over the issuing of fishing licences without proper consent for the Cakaudrove Tunuloa qoliqoli area.

Speaking at the Cakaudrove Tunuloa qoliqoli meeting at Vunikura Village this week, Ratu Naiqama said there had been cases where villagers had obtained licences for commercial purposes without proper consent.

The concern was also made known to Cakaudrove Fisheries officer Joji Vakawaletabua who was at the meeting.

Mr Vakawaletabua told the meeting the qoliqoli committee should check with relevant authorities involved in processing the fishing permit. He said the application for a fishing permit would first be processed by other government departments before the licence was issued by the Fisheries Department.

Ratu Naiqama said he knew of some cases in which some villagers were commercially fishing in the qoliqoli without meeting the requirements. He said there were standard requirements outlined for fishing licences which included a few signatures. Ratu Naiqama asked the fisheries officials for their assistance in checking the licences issued to the villagers without the proper procedures being followed.

Taboo to Enrich Qoliqoli

Serafina Silaitoga

THERE will be no fishing in certain areas of the fishing grounds of the districts of Cakaudrove and Tunuloa.

The decision for the taboo was made at this week's Cakaudrove Tunuloa qoliqoli meeting at Vunikura Village.

American Peace Corp Christine San Antonio who works in Nanuca Village presented the idea at the meeting. The committee endorsed the idea of a taboo of which certain details are to be clarified first.

Committee chairman and Tui Cakau Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu said the idea was a good one.
The committee will need to discuss which areas villagers will use during the taboo period. Ratu Naiqama told the committee to carefully consider villagers' daily needs.

He said the taboo would enrich the qoliqoli of Cakaudrove. The sea food supply for their future generation, he added, should also be considered in decisions being made today.
Ratu Naiqama also reminded the committee to work with islanders of Rabi and Kioa to protect the qoliqoli.
